Summer is creeping up on us in New England and it is coming in hot! Though your oil tank is not the first thing you think of when you think of summertime, it is important to keep it in mind! Without preventative maintenance all year round, it could cause some damage to your tank. A new tank could cost you thousands of dollars out of pocket and cause you an overload of stress. Follow these summer oil tank maintenance tips in order to keep your tank in its best condition for the cold weather that will follow the summer.

Keep Your Tank Half-Way Full

It is recommended that you keep your tank at least half way full all year round, especially during the summer months. This is because as the air gets humid and becomes moist, it can begin to cause condensation within the tank. Any moisture or water are the enemy to your oil tank, as it will cause corrosion. Corrosion is the last thing you want to happen to your tank, so alway make sure it is at least half-way full to prevent any moisture from being able to enter.

Look Out for Leaks

You should be checking on your oil tank throughout the summer. Examine every visible part of your tank to check for signs of any possible leaking. You should also be looking out for any rust as this is a sign that your tank is suffering from possible corrosion.

Check on the Legs

The legs of your tank are the support, so it is important to make sure they are in good condition. Always make sure that your tank is on a level surface, preferably concrete. Any sign that your tank is unstable requires immediate attention.

Look for Surface Damage

If you notice anything on the surface of your tank such as dents, oil stains, or tilting as these could lead to huge problems down the line.

Keep a Clear Route to the Fill Pipe

During the summer, your grass, landscape, or weeds could grow enough to block your fill pipe. It is important to keep this area clear so you or your oil company can find it quickly and easily if ever needed.
